The weather in October is known for a number of reasons across the country.

It's when temperatures begin to cool off, transitioning from summer to fall. The Atlantic tends to produce one or two tropical storms during the month. And some places see their first snowflakes since last winter.

In California, however, it's the worst month for wildfires.

Dry vegetation and strong winds — especially the Santa Ana winds — produce a much better chance for large wildfires to spread quickly.

In fact, five of the six most destructive wildfires in California's history have occurred in October.
