Brandon Steburg, defensive end for Papillion-LaVista High School, is now in a medically-induced coma, according to posts on social media by Brandon's grandfather.

School officials say Steburg is listed in critical condition.

Steburg ran from the field after a play just before half-time Friday night.  He started to exhibit concussion-like symptoms, according to Papio-LaVista school officials.  9-1-1 was called while the athletic director and coaches attended to Steburg.  No one saw anything during the play that would indicate an injury.  School officials suspect that something may have happened earlier in the game to cause the concussion-like symptoms.  First responders took Steburg to Nebraska Medicine.

According to posts on social media, Steburg has undergone surgery and will be in a medically-induced coma for a week.

Steburg's family released a statement on Facebook thanking the public for their support.

The Monarchs, Papillion-LaVista's football team, was playing Creighton Prep at Burke High School when the incident occurred.

A gofundme page has been set up to help with his medical bills.
