Shots fired: Keith Williams vs. Zach Smith round two

I don’t know what Nebraska Wide Receivers Coach Keith Williams did to Ohio State, but he has clearly gotten under somebody’s skin. A Twitter “beef” between Williams and Ohio State Wide Receiver Coach Zach Smith that sparked a few months ago was reignited this afternoon, and it’s almost comical.

Keith Williams is one of the most active college football coaches on Twitter. He posts videos of his receivers running through drills, as well as some inspirational wisdom. Clearly, Smith takes offense to such behavior.

Williams quickly fired back with a series of his own tweets:

Smith could be bothered by the fact that Nebraska has landed top receiver recruits like Keyshawn Johnson Jr. and Jaeveon McQuitty. Or he could be bothered by the fact that Tyjon Lyndsey, a four-star wide receiver according to Rivals.com, has both Nebraska and Ohio State in his top group of schools he wants to attend.

Either way, it seems like the Huskers have gotten into the heads of some people in Columbus. And, if we want to talk about who won and who lost (which the internet loves to do) the Huskers clearly put one in the win column. For starters Smith committed the ultimate twitter sin and a pure signal that he made a mistake by deleting his tweet...quickly.

If the Huskers aren’t “relevant”, why take these shots at a non-threat? With Pro Football Focus giving Jordan Westerkamp the highest-grade for a returning wide receiver in the nation, and with ESPN ranking the Nebraska receiving corps second in the Big Ten behind Michigan and ahead of Penn State, I think some would argue the Huskers receivers are very, very relevant.

Ohio State is supposed to be the top dog of the Big Ten. They took a page out of Jim Harbaugh’s playbook. Why not ruffle some feathers? What is there to lose? This kind of action shows that the Buckeyes are paying attention to what happens in Lincoln.

One thing coaches at every level of every sport preach to their athletes is not to give an opponent “bulletin board material”. I can almost promise you a picture of that tweet will be on the Huskers bulletin board inside their visiting locker room in the Horseshoe on November 5th.

I’m not sure the Huskers needed another reason to get fired up for a week nine battle against Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes, but now they have it.
