The Huskers took the field at Memorial Stadium for the second scrimmage of fall camp. The team simulated game action with a full officiating crew present.

Two minute drill

The team started out with a two minute drill. Tommy Armstrong threw a couple of interceptions during the drill, and Mike Riley said the drill looked sloppy as a whole.

"We need a lot of work in that," Riley said. "We've done about four or five days like that and some of it has been OK. That's part of our deal, when you're in almost a 100-percent passing mode, we've just got to keep going and get the right stuff. It was kind of sloppy."

DeMornay Pierson-El

Wide Receiver DeMornay Pierson-El looked more comfortable than ever during the scrimmage, catching a touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone over cornerback Boaz Joseph, and also making a few plays running the Fly Sweep.

Pierson-El worked with both the first and second teams to maximize his reps in order to get him acclimated to game like situations. Part of the reason he was able to do this is because wide receivers Brandon Reilly and Jordan Westerkamp did not practice because of minor injuries.

Players earning scholarships

The Huskers gave out their last three available scholarships this weekend. Riley said it was a tough decision and about five guys were in the discussion.

Senior fullback Graham Nabity, senior defensive tackle Logan Rath and senior linebacker Brad Simpson all received scholarships.

Freshmen making impacts

It seems like each week a new freshman pops up that Riley has to make a tough decision on regarding redshirts.

Freshman wide receiver JD Spielman made some waves today, showing off his speed in the return game as well as in the passing game. Riley said they are "force-feeding" Spielman because think he can make a huge impact on special teams.

Freshman wide receiver Derrion Grim is also a candidate to be activated and not receive a redshirt. With just two weeks until the first game.

Riley will have to decide soon which freshman he wants to redshirt with just one week until game week.

Riley also said captains will be named within the next few days. He decided to wait until closer to the first game to name captains because he did not want to limit leadership.

Injury update

Freshman Tre Bryant went down during the scrimmage, but Riley said he just had the wind knocked out of him.

Offensive lineman Jalin Barnett went down with a sprained ankle which is a hit to an already thin offensive line following the news that right guard Jerald Foster is out for the season. Boe Wilson will likely have to step in at left guard.
