Republican Donald Trump has been elected the next President of the United States.

The time-stamped information below is coverage of the 2016 presidential election from The E.W. Scripps Company's Washington DC bureau that occurred Nov. 8-9, 2016.

2:40 A.M. EST UPDATE: Democrat Hillary Clinton has called Republican Donald Trump to concede the 2016 presidential election.

2:30 A.M. EST UPDATE: Donald Trump wins Wisconsin and has 276 electoral votes — enough to be the next president of the United States, according to the Associated Press.

2:25 A.M. EST UPDATE: Donald Trump has arrived at his election headquarters and will speak soon.

2:10 A.M. EST UPDATE: Donald Trump takes Alaska, according to some media outlets. That puts him at 269 of the necessary 207 votes.

2 A.M. EST UPDATE: Clinton's campaign chair speaks and tells the crowd the election is too close to call and they will not have anything more to say tonight. Hillary Clinton wins Maine, though Trump gets a point there. He has 265 electoral votes. 

1:55 A.M. EST UPDATE: Donald Trump is nearing victory as he inches toward the necessary 270 electoral votes needed to clinch. A campaign chair at Hillary Clinton's headquarters is expected to speak soon.

1:40 A.M. EST UPDATE: Trump wins Pennsylvania, the Associated Press reports. That puts him at 264 electoral votes to 215 for Clinton.

1:20 A.M. EST UPDATE: Republicans retain control of the Senate after winning Pennsylvania, the Associated Press reports. The presidential race is still undetermined. Trump remains in the lead.

1:15 A.M. EST UPDATE: The presidential race is down to eight states, and Trump is leading over Clinton. 

12:23 A.M. EST UPDATE: Hillary Clinton takes Nevada, according to the Associated Press. Republicans have officially clinched the House majority, AP reports.

12:05 A.M. EST UPDATE: Trump wins Iowa, the Associated Press reports.

11:55 P.M. EST UPDATE: The Associated Press reports Donald Trump has won Utah.

11:35 P.M. EST UPDATE: Donald Trump wins Florida and Georgia, Associated Press reports. CBS News predicts he will also win Iowa.

 

11:30 P.M. EST UPDATE: Clinton wins Washington, Associated Press says. Trump leads Wisconsin with nearly 70 percent of the vote counted, and he is projected to win Utah. 

11:20 P.M. EST UPDATE: Trump is leading Nebraska, according to CNN. 

11:05 P.M. EST UPDATE: Hillary Clinton wins Oregon, Associated Press reports. Donald Trump wins North Carolina. Fox News predicts he'll win Utah as well.

11 P.M. EST UPDATE: Hillary Clinton wins California and Hawaii the Associated Press reports. Idaho goes to Trump. MSNBC has called North Carolina in favor of Trump.

10:55 P.M. EST UPDATE: Donald Trump wins Florida, Associated Press says.

10:50 P.M. EST UPDATE: Clinton wins Colorado, Associated Press says.

10:30 P.M. EST UPDATE: Donald Trump wins Ohio, according to the Associated Press. Hillary Clinton wins Virginia. Stock market futures plummet as Trumps' chances for a win increase. Trump leads electoral votes 168-122.

10:10 P.M. EST UPDATE: Missouri picks Donald Trump, New Mexico picks Hillary Clinton. She is leading Pennsylvania, but it has not been called.

10 P.M. EST UPDATE: Virginia goes to Hillary Clinton.

9:40 P.M. EST UPDATE: Trump leads Clinton by 33 electoral votes. The New York Times' forecast says Trump wil win by 55 percent. No battleground states have been called yet.

9:25 P.M. EST UPDATE: All of Florida is in except for Broward County. State still not called. Clinton takes Connecticut. Trump takes Louisiana. 

9:10 P.M. EST UPDATE: Trump leads Clinton 123 to 104 in electoral votes.

9 P.M. EST UPDATE: Trump takes Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas and Nebraska. Clinton takes New York and Illinois. Battleground states North Carolina, Florida and Ohio are still too close to call.

8:45 P.M. EST UPDATE: In Florida, just more than 100,000 votes separate Trump and Clinton, with Trump leading. 

8:40 P.M. EST UPDATE: Some media projecting Republicans will retain control of the House.

8:30 P.M. EST UPDATE: Trump takes Alabama, per the Associated Press. He also wins Arkansas.

8:10 P.M. EST UPDATE: Trump wins South Carolina, per the Associated Press.

8:05 P.M. EST UPDATE: The electoral count as of 8:05 p.m. EST is Clinton 68, Trump 48.

8 P.M. EST UPDATE: With 77 percent of the Florida vote counted, Clinton is in the lead in that state. Hillary Clinton takes Washington D.C., Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Illinois, Maryland and Delaware, multiple news outlets report. Donald Trump takes Tennessee, Mississippi and Oklahoma.

7:50 P.M. EST UPDATE: Some media projecting Donald Trump to win South Carolina.

7:30 P.M. EST UPDATE: West Virginia goes to Donald Trump. Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia — too early to call.

7 P.M. EST UPDATE: Vermont has been called for Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump wins Kentucky and Indiana, per the Associated Press. Other states that have closed polls at 7 p.m. EST: Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. Georgia is too close to call, and it's too early to call for South Carolina and Virginia.

6:45 P.M. EST UPDATE: Maryland's election officials said a couple of voters have reported they received ballots that were already marked. It is being called "human error" and the report states when a voter makes a mistake they sometimes hand the ballot back to poll workers. Some workers get busy and somehow give them to other voters, the AP reports.

6:30 P.M. EST UPDATE: A polling station in Azusa, California is on lockdown after a shooting in the area. Multiple people were injured. The incident occurred near a middle school. The shooter is still on the loose.

6 P.M. EST UPDATE: Polls are now closed in parts of Kentucky and Indiana. A TV station in central Florida is reporting one polling location has been evacuated due to a suspicious package.

5:30 P.M. EST UPDATE: The Arapahoe County Clerk's Office in Colorado says the voter registration system is back online. The Denver Elections Office confirms the system is running again in Denver as well, according to TheDenverChannel.com.

5:25 P.M. EST UPDATE: Media in Colorado is publishing reports of possible polling places down throughout the state. This report is still being confirmed.

5 P.M. EST UPDATE: Both presidential candidates have voted. Hillary Clinton went to her polling place in Chappaqua, New York, in the morning. Donald Trump went to a Manhattan election site and was with his wife, Melania, who also voted. The vice presidential candidates also voted this morning.

4:45 P.M. EST UPDATE: The first polls are set to close in a little more than one hour, with several more set for closure at 7 p.m. EST. Earlier today, a Nevada judge dismissed a last-minute lawsuit filed by Donald Trump which alleged some polling places in the state were kept open later than they should have been.
