Papillion, NE - Russ Zeeb told his friends this week to start calling him Mr. Zeeb instead of Lieutenant Zeeb.

The well-known Sarpy County deputy celebrated his birthday and his retirement on the same day. After four decades on the job, March 15th was Russ Zeeb Day, so declared by the Sarpy County Board of Commissioners.

Co-workers and friends thanked Zeeb at a retirement party.  His boss, Sheriff Jeff Davis said deputies like Zeeb have a personal touch that can't be replaced. "Each time we had a serious accident or a drowning, he's still friends with those people from those incidents because of the way he handled it. They'll remember him that way and we will too," said Davis.

During his career, Zeeb worked with many organizations to promote safety including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Pride-Omaha and Project Extra Mile.  He is especially proud of the efforts to reduce underage drinking and drunk driving. "Even though I'm gone, I know those programs will remain in place and hopefully save a life some place or another," said Zeeb.

Zeeb has also served as a volunteer firefighter and a member of the Papillion City Council.
