Council Bluffs, IA - A charred, burned out house reminds residents on Norwood Drive everyday of the deadly fire two weeks ago. Tonight, we're learning more about what the police surveillance camera set up at a neighbors house showed.
Video captures Mark Vanderwoude's actions the moment he pulls up into this neighborhood until the house catches fire. At 3:06 p.m. video shows Vanderwoude arriving on scene in his work van. He then backs the van into the driveway.
Vanderwoude walks out of frame for the next 30 seconds, that's when police believe he went to the back of the house and got in through a rear door. A minute later, the camera shows him opening the garage door from the inside. Officers believe he then took a flammable liquid from the van before closing the garage door.
Then at 3:11 p.m. fire shoots from the home. An explosion nearly blows the garage door off its track. It doesn't take long before the whole house is up in flames and Vanderwoude is trapped inside.
Fire fighters and police arrive seven minutes later. Crews put out the blaze and discover Vanderwoude's charred body inside.
Mark Vanderwoude is listed on the title of the home, but his wife had a restraining order against him and he was not supposed to come near the house.
