Huskers Leave Devaney Center with a Win
Last college basketball game in the sports center
Lincoln, NE - In their farewell appearance at the Devaney Sports Center, the Nebraska mens' basketball team took on the Minnesota Gophers.
The crowd stormed the court after the Cornhuskers won the game 53-51.
The Huskers have played at the Devaney Sports Center for 37 years. They will move to the new Pinnacle Bank Arena west of campus next season. When completed in September 2013, it will have a seating capacity of roughly 15,000, slightly smaller than Omaha's comparable CenturyLink Center.
For many Wednesday night, it was a bittersweet ending.
"For me growing up I went to these games as a kid with my dad and my brother, so having it be the last game here it's kind of sad," said Anna Weighandt, a UNL Track Athelete. "But at the same time it's good because it's a new era for us."
The Devaney will undergo a 20 million dollar facelift. It will then become home to the Nebraska volleyball team next fall.
The building was named for Bob Devaney who was a Nebraska Hall of Fame football coach and athletic director at the school.
