Hospital Brings Winter Indoors for Children
Hospital patients see snow for first time
There is nothing like building an old fashioned snow man. This is Emily's first time playing with snow, something they don't get much of in Texas. The five year old has been at the Nebraska Medical Center since October. She's recuperating from a transplant. Since the little guys can't get outside, the Nebraska Medical Center brought what Mother Nature dropped off inside.
Emily's mother Theresa Somerville says, "Being able to bring it in and controled area, it's much better because I know she would dive into it if she could." The hospital has been talking up the recent snow storm to kids, adding a little educational element to the day. The hospital teachere Lisa Gulseth says, "We've been talking about the snow, predicting the snow, reading snow stories and all kinds of things to get the kids hyped up too."
All it took was a few bins full of snow, a few laughs from hospital staff and maybe a few hits - all for a brief escape from reality. Gulseth says, "Some of them haven't been outside for one, two, three months. So for us to bring the snow into them is really special for them."
