Convicted Killer Dies In Prison
Omaha, NE -- A convicted killer has died just two months into her prison sentence. 29-year-old Monique Lee was serving life in prison for the murder of her former landlord Karen Jenkins.
The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York tells KMTV Action 3 News that Lee complained of not feeling well and was being monitored by their nursing staff Thursday evening. At 7:10am Friday, she collapsed in the NCCW Medical Department where staff performed CPR until an ambulance took her to the hospital. She was pronounced dead at the York General Hospital at 8:20am. Lee's cause of death hasn't been determined.
In October 2010, Lee lured her former landlord, Karen Jenkins, into a vacant apartment and strangled her with an electrical cord from a vacuum cleaner. Lee and her brother, Gary Lee, hid Jenkins' body under a vacant house near 40th & Ames Ave. It was found days later. Gary Lee is serving a sentence of 65-100 years in prison. Jenkins was a professor at Metro Community College, a landlord, and a business owner.
A Grand Jury will conduct an investigation into Lee's death because she was in the custody of the Department of Correctional Services.
Lee's attorney had appealed her life sentence.
