March For A Safer City
Omaha students will spend Martin Luther King Day spreading peace.
Omaha, NE- Students at South High will spend Martin Luther King Day spreading peace. After the gun deaths of several teens, including their classmate Montrell Wiseman, South High students formed a peace group. On Monday, they'll walk in a peace march, a one mile walk.
Tiyonna Crawford is marching to show that people from different backgrounds can come together. "It all started because our friend passed away and we want to show every body how important it is to stay together and be equal."
On the day the nation remembers Dr. Martin Luther King, the students will follow in his footsteps, and march. this time, in downtown Omaha. The march begins Monday at 3:30 at Central High school. The students will walk to the Creighton campus.
Khalil Westbrook knows the violence will never end, but he hopes his efforts are the start of a brighter future. "I really want the community to come together. Stop all of this, I'm from this certain hood, I'm from this type of gang." And he's not alone, there are almost 20 other students in the peace group at South, all are tired of the violence.
Everyone attending will be asked to sign a peace pledge in hopes that one day, their message will spread across the nation.
