City officials say the restaurant recently closed after getting robbed multiple times. In December of 2009, employees at the 62nd and Ames restaurant were robbed at gunpoint. In May of 2011 an armed man walked in and demanded cash from the register. Seven months later - an attempted robbery.

 

"Too many robberies, I mean it's just as simple as that, too many robberies and they couldn't keep their doors open or didn't want to keep their doors open because of the liability issues," Councilman Ben Gray said.

 

"It's alarming to have that kind of stuff going on here with kids and a wife and everything else," Daniel Wilkerson said.

 

So alarming, the restaurant boarded up the doors and painted over the signs. Neighbors are glad they no longer see flashing police lights at the restaurant.

 

Councilman Ben Gray, whose district borders the Taco Bell, says developers are keeping the area alive.

 

A new Planet Fitness and Heartland Worforce Solutions have moved in and a Walmart is on the way - giving residents something to look forward to.

 

"I think the future is bright as long as we can continue to keep moving forward looking forward and not looking back and trying to address crime as much as we can," Gray said.

 

Taco Bell would only say "The restaurant at 62nd and Ames was closed late last year and all positions were offered to employees at nearby restaurants."

 

No word yet if a new business will take it's place.
