AR-15 Sales Up After Connecticut School Massacre
Metro residents are purchasing the guns in higher numbers since Friday's massacre
Omaha, NE - Just days after the tragic Newtown, Connecticut school shooting, local gun store owners say they've seen an increase in sales of the same type of gun used in the attack that killed 20 children and 6 adults.
"It's amazing with what happened in Connecticut a lot more are just more concerned with their safety," John Dineen, General Manager of Sols said.
The AR-15 is the most popular rifle in the U.S. with three-million americans owning one. It's so popular, the rifle is the gun of choice in both movies and video games. "It's your typical military style gun. Whenever you hear about the military you associate the AR-15 with the M-16 or the M-4 that the military carries so I think it's one of the more popular and better known guns out there," Dineen said.
Sol employees have seen both repeat and first time customers looking to purchase guns. They have about six of the AR-15's in stock but that availability could change with tougher gun control laws.
The weapon has been used in some of the worst mass shootings. In addition to the Connecticut massacre, a gunman used an AR-15 last week to kill two people at a mall in Portland, Oregon. In July, James Holmes reportedly used an AR-15 to kill 12 people in the a movie theater in Colorado.
Sols general manager John Dineen says more people are rushing to get rifles before serious gun control talks reach Washington. "You always do see people that are maybe a little bit more cautious of 'ok, what laws are going to happen now' so they kind of act before anything happens ," Dineen said.
