Omaha, NE - The Omaha Personnel Board voted unanimously in favor of a new contract with Omaha firefighters.  The next step is city council approval.

Firefighters already voted to accept the offer which includes a raise, increases premiums and deductibles on their health insurance and makes changes to the firefighter's pension plan. Union President Steve LeClair says the pension changes require firefighters to work a little longer and take a little less out, while preserving the health of the fund.  Firefighters hired under this contract will be required to work for thirty years before they are eligible to retire at age 55 and receive retirement benefts.  Current firefighters can retire at age 45 after 25 years on the job.

The city council has scheduled a public hearing on the contract for December 11th, a vote is expected the following week. LeClair called the contract "a step in the right direction" for the city and the union.
