Voters Reject Longer Terms for State Senators
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Voters have rejected a measure that would have allowed state senators to serve longer in the Nebraska Legislature.
Voters on Tuesday turned down the proposal, which was placed on the ballot by the Legislature.
The proposal would have allowed senators to serve up to three consecutive four-year terms, but the voters' decision means the current two-term limit will stand.
Holdrege Sen. Tom Carlson proposed that change, arguing that lawmakers could serve the state better if given more time to understand the issues and learn legislative procedures.
Carlson says under the current limits, lobbyists and the governor's office hold more power than inexperienced senators.
Gov. Dave Heineman opposed the change, saying it wasn't needed.
