Omaha, NE -- Most dads don't retire just 10-years into their career, but  Rocky's not like most dads.
He's a drug sniffing,  crime fighting K9, and is now ready to pass down the family business to his kids.

91/2-year old Rocky hung-up the badge more than a year ago, along with his partner retired Sgt. Ed Van Buren.  While he's no longer policing city streets, Rocky's legacy continues.

Retirement for the decorated K9 deputy is anything but donut breaks and long naps in the sun. "He still likes to work a little bit," said his retired partner Sgt. Ed Van Buren.

Rocky is still just as driven as he was when he policed the streets. Rocky's owner is his partner Ret. Sgt. Van Buren. "While he and I were teamed together, (we) seized over $4,000 in drug currency alone.  His biggest bust was 1,940 pounds of marijuana," added Van Buren.

Rocky's legacy for protecting the streets isn't over.  In fact it's growing, by four paws, wagging tails and happy faces. You see Rocky's a dad.   Ed explained the pups have, "a high drive like rocky, they love to go out and do police type work."

Meet Barney. Van Buren says Barney is most like Rocky - strong and enjoys a good fight.    "I think he'll be a good drug detection dog, but I think his forte is going to be patrol," said Van Buren.

KMTV Action 3's Liz Dorland had the privilege to get in on Barney's training Tuesday afternoon at Code 2 K9 Services.  Liz held onto Barney's leather leash while Ed put on a padded sleeve and Barney latched-on.  "We're doing bite work to start off on a sleeve working on his bite build up," explained Van Buren.

We also met Mel.  She is a sweet quiet girl but, like her dad can sniff out any illegal activity.  "We've had a lot of interest in departments wanting to purchase his pups, along with individuals families that would like to purchase his pups not only as a pet but as a family protection dog," said Rocky's partner.

For Rocky and his pups, taking a bite out of crime, is all in the family.
rocky is expected to have more pups in the near future.
