Bellevue - Offutt Air Force Base officials cleared a suspicious package found in a Mayflower Storage truck at the Capehart gate.  They say there were no explosives found inside the package.

People were allowed to return to Offutt Air Force Base late Friday afternoon, after an evacuation before noon.  Military officials say a package in a commercial vehicle was flagged as suspicious by a military dog.  It happened during a routine check at an entrance gate at Offutt Air Force Base.

Officials say the package was flagged at the gate off Capehart Road.  The Omaha Police Department's bomb squad had been called in to help.

Base spokesman Tech. Sgt. Markus Maier says the gate was closed for about 5 hours and several buildings near the gate evacuated as a precaution.

Offutt is home to the U.S. Strategic Command headquarters, which includes nuclear weapons command and control as well as space and missile defense for all branches of the U.S. military.  A short time before the incident, ground was broken on a new headquarters that will help expand STRATCOM's mission.
