Latham, Boswell Square off for Iowa 3rd
Council Bluffs, IA - The race for Iowa’s 3rd congressional district could have national implications, because two incumbents are running for the same seat.
Representatives Leonard Boswell and Tom Latham squared off in Council Bluffs Thursday night.
The two congressmen were forced to run against each other after district lines shifted, bringing them both to the third.
They battled Iowa postal problems, social security, FEMA funding, and foreign policy among many topics.
After the debate both felt confident with their performances.
“I’m feeling good,” said Boswell. “People say we have differences and I hope people got out of tonight that I’m big on the middle class.”
"The debate was very instructive,” said Latham. “You have two incumbents, members of congress, that have voting records and that should be what this election is about.”
When asked if they could take back on piece of legislation, both agreed they regretted voting for no child left behind.
Iowa voters also weighed in after the debate.
"I think it was good because they both had a chance to talk about what it is that they have accomplished.”
"It was a good number of specifics from Latham and good country boy talk from Boswell.”
According to their camps the two candidates are set to square off three more times before the November election.
