Congressman Lee Terry's latest advertisement has Douglas County Democrats calling him a liar.  They say Terry accuses his opponent John Ewing of spending money he never spent.

Douglas County Democratic Chairman Kris Pierce wants Rep. Terry to apologize and remove an the ad, they call false.  The ad claims Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing overspent his budget by $700,000 in 5 years.  Ewing says he has been under-budget every year and the extra money was from salary increases for workers, which are out of his control.

Douglas County Clerk Tom Cavanaugh agrees with Ewing saying he's exceeded what the county board's requests.  He also said that Ewing has decreased the treasurer expense numbers by 4.5% over the last 5 years.

“I think it's the lowest of the low.  When you know the truth and you know that you're not speaking the truth and yet you continue on, in my opinion it's the lowest of the low," Pierce explained.

Douglas County Commissioner Clare Duda, who originally showed Terry the numbers, now, admits he didn't do an adequate job verifying the figures.  Terry says he will not apologize for the ad or remove it from the air.

"If you really sort through the false claims what he's really saying is the county board made me do it.  The county board made him spend more than he really wanted," Congressman Terry described.

The Democrats have filed a complaint with the FCC and the FEC.
