Gering, NE - The sheriff investigating the mutilation of a three-year-old German Shepherd tells KMTV Action 3 News he has some "very promising leads" that may point to a suspect.

The dog--Ike--two weeks ago crawled back to his home after he'd been seriously injured, slashed from his chest area to his genitals. Ike's owner followed a vet's advice and had the dog euthanized the next day. Vets also told him the dog's injuries were inflicted by a person, not by another animal or a wire fence.

Today Scotts Bluffs County Sheriff Mike Overman told us the case remains an active investigation: "We definitely have some leads."

More than eight thousand people "like" a Facebook page called "Justice for Ike." The story of the dog's mutilation has run across the country and overseas. The Humane Society of America is offering a $2,500 reward for an arrest and conviction. A Scottsbluff businessman has donated an additional $500. Another individual has donated $1,000.
