LINCOLN –  State Senator Brenda Council pleaded guilty Tuesday afternoon to two counts of abuse of public records, for using $63,000 from her campaign account to gamble.  She didn't report the expenditures.

A Lancaster County judge ordered Council to pay a $500 fine and court costs.

Council has apologized for what she called an error in judgment, and has said she's working to repay the $27,000 shortfall.  She also has said she plans to continue running for re-election in northeast Omaha. Council says she's getting treatment for a gambling addiction.

Council is running against her predecessor, Ernie Chambers, who was the longest-serving member of the Nebraska Legislature.

Tuesday afternoon, Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, who filed the charges against her, said, “Senator Council knowingly filed false campaign finance statements.  Today’s guilty plea helps to ensure she is held accountable for her unlawful actions.”
