Omaha, NE - A 29-year-old man is dead after confrontation with Omaha Police Officers.

Police Lieutenant Darci Tierney says gunshots were reported in northeast Omaha around 2:15 a.m. Sunday.

Officers who were investigating the gunshots came across 29-year-old Jermaine Lucas. Police say Lucas was armed.

During the encounter with Lucas, officers fired their weapons and Lucas was killed.

"Officers state at this time Lucas lunges for his weapon, and they become in fear of their lives," said Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer. "Both officers discharged their weapons multiple times."

Two Omaha police officers, Alvin Lugod and Joseph Koenig, have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. A grand jury will also review the incident to evaluate whether the officers acted properly.

Police officials say Jermaine Lucas was on a 48 hour furlough from the Nebraska Department of Corrections.

In 2010 he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a gun, and was serving a 5-8 year sentence.
