Omaha, NE - Fire killed a family cat Thursday night at Stony Brook Apartment and Town Homes. That's on South 148th Plaza in West Omaha.

The fire was reported around 8:30 p.m. and started in a kitchen. Fire investigators say  the burner was left on, and the flames quickly spread. One of the residents was home and called 911 before getting out.  Crews arrived to the scene and were able to keep the flames to the first story, and from spreading to other apartments. However, they say the townhome was so badly damaged on the first story, there was no way the people who lived there would be able to call it home anytime soon.

Omaha Fire Departments' Battalion Chief John Kohlbek explained, "The toughest part was finding the address and finding the water source, but we got here quickly.  Luckily one of the engines was at a football game, so they were just right around the corner, so we were here very quick and were able to make a nice quick knockdown."

The American Red Cross is helping the two residents who were displaced by the fire find a place to live.
