Third Teen with Benson High School Ties Gets Killed
Someone gunned down Gabriel Carrillo Friday night
Omaha, NE - Flowers and a balloon mark the spot where 18-year-old Gabriel Carrillo was killed Friday night. The teen went to Benson High School up until the 10th grade friends say he dropped out. Carrillo is the third teen with ties to Benson High to get killed in the last year.
"I think it sucks more of the fact to know someone like that that dies or know so many people that die," senior Ashlyn Sievert said.
"There's a lot of young violence lately, maybe not just at Benson but in this community period, it's just too much and it needs to stop," Susan Tritz said.
Last August, someone shot and killed 17-year-old Devina Johnson near 36th and Ames. The young mother was a senior at Benson. Then in May, police found the body of freshman Melanie Koontz in a creek near 78th and Blondo. Police made arrests in both cases.
Benson's principal declined to comment, but parents say it's the responsibility of both the school and parents to stop the violence.
"There needs to be more outreach programs for these kids to try to cure the violence within them," Kelly Moore said.
"I'm not gonna say the school is bad I just think it starts at home because you know most of these kids they're not even kids anymore they think they're adults," Iris Franklin said.
