The Mayor's Illegal Gun Task Force has some new ideas to reduce crime in Omaha.

There were a number of recommendations highlighted Thursday at city hall.  The OPD is already bringing more attention to the $500 reward offered for illegal guns.  The task force would like to hire another gang specialist, expand the Shotspotter system, and create a program specifically for misdemeanor gun offenders.

The task force also wants to have more Gun Amnesty Days, possibly accepting them every day at certain stations.  They would like to see the OPD offer gift cards for turned in firearms.

“Not only has it been effective on that front, but it does provide that potential that that next weapon that may get used could be turned in, but also that community involvement," said OPD Chief Todd Schmaderer.

That community involvement will include an increased role for church groups, and organizations.  The task force says they'll have a "call to action" next week.
