Omaha, NE -- In their darkest moment comes a ray of light. As a family deals with the tragedy of murder comes word that a brand new life is on the way.

Omaha Police say 21 year old Brandon Thomas was murdered Wednesday outside of his home near 41st and Maple.

Neighbors tell Action 3 News the shots were fired around 4:15 Wednesday afternoon, when they stopped a young man was on the ground not breathing.

"When officers arrived they did locate one adult male down near a fence with an apparent gunshot wound," said Omaha Police Officer Michael Pecha.

Thomas' Aunt says he was walking home from the store when someone pulled the trigger.

Paramedics rushed him to the hospital and tried to save his life but it was too late.

"Just remember a happy young man, always with a smile on his face,” said Thomas’ Aunt.

"He was a good kid who never got into any trouble, just a kid who stayed at home with his mom."

Brandon Thomas was a 21 year who was about to become an uncle.

As family members rushed to the hospital, in their darkest moments, Thomas' sister went into labor.

"To lose a child to this type of death, and then you leave one hospital to try and go to congratulate your child for her new baby that’s arriving any minute is more than difficult for any mother,” said Thomas’ Aunt.

As police continued collecting evidence behind the crime tape a mother had to say goodbye to her son and rush to another hospital to welcome a grandchild.

A baby this uncle will never get to know.

"How do you grieve one child and try to celebrate life it’s a very unfortunate situation."

The Omaha Police Chief was out at the scene with investigators.

Police do not have any suspects and are asking anyone who knows anything to help bring this family some justice.
