Fairmont Park Reopens After Chemical Scare
The Council Bluffs Fire Department shut down the park Thursday afternoon
Council Bluffs, Iowa - The Council Bluffs Fire Department has reopened Fairmount Park, after chemicals were found in a trash can.
The bomb squad was called in after a cleaning crew found some sort of chemical in a garbage can. The workers experienced watery, itchy eyes. Responders closed the park to all traffic while they investigated.
Eventually, the bomb squad located the chemical and blew it up. They said it was the best way to dispose of it because it was such a small amount. They say the substance doesn't pose a danger to the public.
As of Thursday evening, it wasn't clear what the substance was. Investigators said they're trying to find out how it got there.
