Pedestrian Struck and Killed While Out Exercising
Woman hit while crossing the street
Council Bluffs, IA - A blue tarp marks the spot where 63-year-old Mae Zhang was hit and killed in Council Bluffs this morning.
"The vehicle was travelling eastbound on Greenview going through Eagle Ridge Drive, struck a pedestrian as she was crossing the street," Officer Greg Casey said.
It happened around 7:30 a.m. not far from where the woman lives. Police say the woman was out for a morning walk as she was crossing the street, a car headed up the hill didn't see her and hit her. Investigators are looking into whether the 21-year-old driver was blinded by the sun.
"It's actually a pretty steep hill up there on Greenview so as she was driving very well the sun could have been right in her eyes when she was going up the hill might not have seen her," Casey said.
Mae Zhang's family was too emotional to talk, but neighbors say they often saw her out walking each day. They say the spot where she was hit is dangerous.
"There are people that are driving at excess speed and it creates a danger," Tom Patton said.
"Its reallly easy not to see people around that corner, especially when you're picking up speed to accelerate up the hill," Ayzia Barr said.
Police are also looking into whether speed was a factor but they say the driver has not been cited or charged. The driver's family had no comment.
