Omaha, NE - Smoke's friends are waiting to hear what caused his death. The donkey--who became a friend to a group of U.S. Marines in Iraq--died at his new home at the Miracle Hills Ranch and Stable late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Tests are being done in Lincoln. There may be a memorial service  for the donkey, considered by many to be a war hero.

Smoke befriended the Marines in Iraq three years ago. Col. John Folsom was among those who took care of him until 2009 in Iraq. When the Marines left, they raised money to bring him to Nebraska.

While in Nebraska, Smoke became a therapy animal to help military personnel recover from post-traumatic stress disorder.
