Des Moines, IA - A man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a kitten was sentenced to one year probation--and 100 hours of service at the Animal Rescue League.

Court records show Roger Brass was also ordered to have a psychological evaluation and to pay a $315 fine to the state. Restitution to the kitten's owner is "to be determined." Brass was scheduled to go to trial later this month.

An off-duty police officer heard a gunshot last April, then saw glass from the front door break, and a small kitten fly from the front of the house. Police later said he admitted to shooting the kitten because he was "mad at his parents."

Animal control officers took the kitten and other cats from the house. The kitten died.
