Families Concerned About Number of Liquor Outlets Near Downtown Omaha
68102 Zip Code Has 114 Outlets
Omaha, NE - Around the Old Market tonight, families worry about how easy it is to get alcohol downtown.
The concern comes less than one week after a shooting claimed the life of an Omaha teenager near 11th and Harney Streets.
We checked on the State Liquor Commission's website and found that in the 68102 zip code, which basically covers Downtown Omaha, there are 114 liquor licenses of any kind. The next highest number we could find was the area between the Crossroads and Westroads with 75. Those are figures that are concerning to parents who live near those zip codes.
"There are too many bars around here," said Doug Harrah of Omaha. "They're open everywhere now. It needs to be more family-oriented down here I believe."
Omaha's Deputy City Attorney tells us getting the green light for a liquor license can take anywhere between 45 days and several months.
