MidAmerican Weighing Options on Nuclear Power
A Bill Stalled in the Senate
Des Moines, IA (AP) - MidAmerican Energy officials are studying their options for nuclear power since the Iowa Legislature adjourned without taking action on a bill the company sought. The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports a MidAmerican spokeswoman says the company is evaluating future options but says it's premature to speak in detail about plans The bill considered by lawmakers would have established a state regulatory structure to allow construction of a nuclear power plant in Iowa. MidAmerican is exploring a new technology using small modular reactors. Building a plant would cost between $1 billion and $2 billion. The Republican-led Iowa House approved a measure but the issue stalled in the Senate. Opponents claim the proposed financing arrangement would make ratepayers bear significant costs instead of investors. (Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
