Papillion, NE - A young mother is going to jail for six months after she left her nine-month-old twins in the basement of her home and went to a friend's, where police say "she drank all day."

Last September, officers found the 21-year-old's twins alone in the basement of the house where she lives and said the babies "had completely soiled their diapers and made a mess of the playpen."

Almost nine hours later, the mother--Michelle Polan--returned to the house near 81st and Park View Boulevard. Officers said she appeared intoxicated; they asked her where she'd been all day. She first told them she hadn't been drinking and was at work. Then, when her blood alcohol test showed her to be almost twice the legal limit for driving, Polan admitted to having three drinks, then "possibly more than three drinks." She finally admitted she hadn't gone to work and had been drinking at a friend's.

Earlier in the day--before police came--Polan's sister heard the twins crying and sent Polan's three-year-old son to wake her. The toddler said his mom "wouldn't wake up." When the babies stopped crying, the sister thought Polan was with them. About half an hour later, she discovered they were alone.

She told police this wasn't the first time the babies had been left home alone.

Workers with Child Protective Services took the children and placed them with Polan's mother.
