Parents Determined to Keep Kids' School Open
Dozens gather for a chili cookoff fundraiser
Omaha, NE - A
little chili to warm the belly and even the souls of members of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Their school is one of six the Archdiocese of Omaha is thinking about closing. "We're all trying our hardest to keep the school open," Jimmy Lee said.
Determined parents and church members cooked up their best chili recipes. Each bowl raking in about five bucks - money Jimmy Lee hopes will help keep the catholic school open for his kids and others. "We're really worried about the kids. We'd like to see them have a chance to go to these catholic schools. It means a lot to south Omaha to have these schools open," Lee said. Church officials say a drop in attendance and money is the reason they're considering closing or merging 30 parishes and 18 schools. A move, Father Frank Jindra says is necessary in hopes of keeping the Catholic community thriving. "We want quality education for our students. In order to do that we have to face a merger and a restructuring away from the parish-based model because the parishes are just not big enough here in southeast Omaha to manage that anymore," Father Frank Jindra said. Students and they're parents will do whatever it takes to save their school even if it's one bowl at a time.
