Six Catholic Schools Could Close
The proposal could save the Archdiocese money
Omaha, NE - For the second time in nearly two years, parents at Holy Name School get news the place they bring their children to learn could soon close.
"I think it's sad, we go out of our way to bring our kids to this school, and I think they do a great job," Jerry Moore said.
"The kids really do need this school here. They get taught really well," Willie Adams said.
The Omaha Archdiocese says there's just not enough money to stay open. They are looking at closing Holy Name, All Saints, Holy Ghost, Saint Joan of Arc, Saints Peter and Paul and Saint Stanislaus because there aren't enough kids enrolling anymore.
Officials say they hope all those kids will move to other catholic schools. "We're looking at can we build up stronger schools, have fewer schools that are stronger rather than having a dozen schools that are maybe weaker," Omaha Archdiocese Chancellor Tim McNeil said.
Still, the plan is still in the early stages a lot can happen.
"I'll wait and see until we get the final notice, otherwise I don't put much credence into it at this time. A lot can happen between now and whatever proposal there might be in 2013," Jim Pullen said.
If all six schools do close, more than 500 students could be forced to relocate.
