Elderly Omaha Woman Recovers; Her Son Accused Of Neglect
Raymond Axt is accused of neglecting to care for his elderly mother after doctors say she had bed sores with maggots and was malnourished.
Omaha, NE- Outside the Douglas County Courthouse Raymond Axt says claimed his innocence.
"I'm innocent and that's it," says Axt.
Axt is accused of neglecting his 87 year-old mother, Irene Axt. In court documents, Adult Protective Services deemed Irene Axt a vulnerable adult and said she couldn't take care of herself.
According to an affidavit, paramedics took Irene Axt to the hospital because she wasn't eating, but doctors found a large bedsore with maggots on her body. They say she was also malnourished.
Raymond Axt was his mother's live-in caretaker. They rented a house at 2324 South 13th Street. He's accused of not properly taking care of his mother. He's charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult.
"I'm completely innocent," says Axt. "I love my mother. I love my mother very much and I would never neglect her."
Earlier this month, KMTV Action 3 News spoke with Irene Axt's daughter, Niecy Axt-Moss. She immediately flew in from Texas when she heard about her mother.
"It's horrible," says Axt-Moss. "This is my mother, but I'm so grateful to God that she's doing better. Very, very grateful."
Axt-Moss says her mother doesn't know about the charges against Axt and if she knew it could set back her recovery.
Irene Axt's court appointed guardian, Doug Lederer, tells KMTV Action News she is slowly recovering and is still on bed rest, but her smile and sense of humor is strong. Lederer says she asks for her son often.
In court Tuesday morning, a judge agreed to let Axt have supervised visits with his mother. Lederer says he will be the supervisor for the visits and thinks they will be beneficial for both.
