Winter Storm Warning issued for Omaha metro

The Omaha metro and surrounding areas will be under a Winter Storm Warning on Thanksgiving Day.

It includes the following counties:

  • Cass, Douglas, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Lancaster, Otoe, Pawnee, Saline, Sarpy, Saunders, Seward, Washington

Winter Storm will affect the area on Thanksgiving Day

A cold front will continue to move south of the region tonight. This will allow colder air to undercut significantly warmer air aloft. Rain is expected to develop tonight, but changing to freezing rain Thursday as the colder air deepens at the surface. The freezing rain will then mix with or change to sleet before ending as a period of light snow Thursday evening. Ice accumulations of one tenth to one quarter of an inch will be possible with an inch or two of sleet and snow combined. Travel may become difficult through the day Thursday. Combined with northerly winds at 5 to 30 mph icing on power lines could lead to a few power outages.

Winter Storm Warning in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. cst Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley has issued a Winter Storm Warning for freezing rain, sleet, and snow, which is in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. cst Thursday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

* Timing: Rain will change to freezing rain then sleet through the day Thursday. Wintry precipitation continues Thursday evening before ending by midnight.

* Ice accumulations: Freezing rain may lead to ice accumulations ranging around one quarter inch by Thursday evening.

* Sleet and snow accumulations: Up to an inch.

* Other impacts: The combination of significant icing and wind my result in power outages. Caution: Dangerous traveling conditions are quite likely to develop during this time. 

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
