Republican nominee for president Donald Trump is coming to Council Bluffs on Wednesday.

Iowa is one of just a dozen battleground states that will likely determine the election on November 8th. Iowa’s six electoral votes will be key as candidates try to get to that magic number of 270.

At 3 pm Wednesday the Mid-America Center will be full of Trump supporters and possibly protesters as he hold a campaign rally.

It’s his first time in Council Bluffs as the Republican nominee.

The last minute scheduling change was unexpected for many in the area.

“It was somewhat of a surprise we usually get more of a heads-up then just the day before but we're certainly excited about it,” said Jeff Jorgensen, Pottawattamie Co. GOP chairman.

Jorgensen hopes Trump’s visit will turn out more voters for the Republican nominee.

“I think Mr. Trump is really demonstrated his wherewithal to connect with the voters and he does it through his rallies and through his personality and his presence at these events,” said Jorgensen.

Also excited is Scott Root, his daughter Sarah Root was killed in January. Law enforcement says Eswin Mejia--an illegal immigrant from Honduras--was drunk when he slammed into root's car.

Trump has used her story as one reason the country needs stronger borders. Root says he didn't really get the same attention from Democrats.

“I haven't heard from one Democrat that's reached out to us prior to going to DC,” said Root.

That response caused Root to change his political affiliation from loyal Democrat to Republican.

KMTV also asked other Council Bluffs residents how they feel about the nominee coming back to town.

“We'll i was kind of surprised, I didn't think he would come back but I think it's great,” said Margaret Jones.

“I think it's a bad idea, earlier in the campaign he said he hated Iowa,” said Paula Koch.

“I think it's a great idea for him to come back out and finish what he started,” said Aubrey Wilheite.

The event starts at 3pm with doors opening at noon.
