“The young female passenger in the back was on flames, so I ripped of my jacket and put the flames out of her hair, it was pretty scary,” said Bret Bailes.

“We all heard it, we all got out five seconds after the woman was in flames, the driver came out the window and the passenger was stuck so the three of us pulled the passenger out through the window,” said Chris Hollbeck.

Bailes, Hollbeck and Dennis Wilson didn't think twice about jumping into a burning car to save the lives of the people inside.

“The tank at the rear of the car was on fire, the rear of the car was on fire, I knew we had very little time to get this man out of the front,” said Wilson, who is a former OPD officer.

He said the situation was surreal, and they struggled with getting one of the victims out of the car, “we knew any second it was gone, and the fire was encroaching on his leg as I was trying to get it unpinned, time was of the essence.”

Firefighters said the car fire started after the gas tank of the car ruptured, and had to let it burn out before OPD traffic investigators could begin their work.

OPD believes that speed and alcohol was a factor in the wreck.
