Steve Lathrop, who held a seat in the unicameral Legislature until 2014, will run for his old seat in District 12 in 2018.

Lathrop was unable to run in 2016 because of term limits. The move to regain a seat in the Legislature is an uncommon one, only Ernie Chambers has successfully been elected back to the Legislature after stepping away because of term limits.

Lathrop, a high-profile attorney, was previously the chairman of the special legislative committee probing the state's prison system.

He told the Omaha World-Herald he is running because people need an independent who can lead and bring people together.

District 12 covers Millard and Ralston and the seat is currently held by 75-year-old Merv Riepe, a retired hospital administrator.

Riepe is currently the chairman of the Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee.

An expensive race is anticipated.
