Rainy weather keeping mosquitoes around

Even though we're just several days away from fall, mosquitoes have been especially pesky in the area.

Persistent rainfall is a major contributor to the mosquito problem according to entomologists with the University of Nebraska. Tuesday was no different with afternoon storms rolling through the Omaha-area. At Lake Zorinsky, it was hard to miss the mosquitoes.

“Obviously this year we have noticed a bit more of mosquitoes and some bugs. Maybe due to the warm weather or due to the humidity" says Uddipta Bhaumik, who was walking at Lake Zorinsky.

The mosquito problem was bad enough to make Justin Kohll wish he wore a shirt.

“Well we just walked down here, I threw a couple of rocks in the lake and we got attacked by mosquitoes. And I've been living (near) here about eight years and we get our house sprayed so I don't notice them in our house," says Kohll.

The mosquito problem is even getting dangerous for some. The Douglas County Health Department reports 52 cases of confirmed or probable West Nile infections this year, which is more than seven times what the county saw the previous two years.
