TransCanada has shut down the Keystone pipeline due to a possible spill in southeastern South Dakota.

The company says the possible leak was first reported Saturday afternoon, and crews found signs of oil on what it calls a "small surface area" about four miles from a pumping station in Freeman, South Dakota.  TransCanada is removing the oil and investigating where it came from.  The company says it has found no significant damage to the environment.

The Keystone pipeline carries oil from Alberta, Canada to refineries in Illinois and Oklahoma. It is separate from the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that would have run through Nebraska and was rejected by the Obama Administration.
