Officials with the Omaha Public Power District recommenced on Thursday to cease operations at the Fort Calhoun station by the end of the year.

President and CEO Tim Burke told the board of directors during Thursday's meeting that the "continued operation of Fort Calhoun Station is not in the long-term financial best interests of OPPD or its customer-owners."

OPPD"s recommendation comes after their reviewer of resource planning efforts.

“While the recommendation to cease operations at Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station was a difficult one, it was a determination that had to be made in order to fulfill the district’s mission and our responsibility to our customer-owners,” Burke said. “This recommendation is not reflective of employee or Exelon performance.”

Now, the board will have to review the recommendation and they are expected to make a vote on that during next month's meeting.

If it's approved, OPPD officials say that they will not propose any rate increase through the year 2021.

The meeting and voting will take place on June 16th.
