Tens of thousands of Omaha Public Power District customers had their power knocked out in the Omaha metro after heavy, wet snow Sunday.

Reports indicate that many power outages were caused by tree branches, which snapped under the weight of heavy snow and leaves.

At its peak, nearly 55,000 customers were without power. As of 9:30 p.m., outages were reduced to 28,000 in Douglas County and close to 30,000 in total.

OPPD says crews will be working through the night to restore power. The majority of customers will have power restored by the end of the day Monday.
