The Omaha Police Crime Lab has some big accolades and a new name.

As of Oct. 30, it is accredited by the top international forensics board. The crime lab, now called the forensics investigations section, is following the strictest rules for crime scene investigations.

"Accreditation is the ultimate form of transparency," Chief Todd Schmaderer said. "It ensures that the product we put out has been vetted, tested, verified and can go back and be checked and verified and that is a very important piece of the community."

Schamderer also said the forensic team and new lab will play a huge role in reducing crime. The department is also working with the University of Nebraska Medical Center with its crime lab services.
