The city of Omaha’s annual Thanksgiving Day lighting of the downtown holiday lights has been postponed because of weather.

“The safety of the public is our greatest concern, and with icy road conditions forecast for Thanksgiving Day, we feel it is in the best interest of the community to reschedule this year’s Lighting Ceremony,” Marc Nichols, the volunteer executive director for Downtown Omaha, Inc. said in a prepared statement Wednesday.

The lighting ceremony has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Gene Leahy Mall.

Organizers say the lights won’t work in the rain, which is expected through part of the day.  Forecasts also call for sleet and eventually some snow.

The lights shine from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. every night through Jan. 3.
