Omaha Fire Chief Bernie Kanger plans to retire in May.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says she was notified of his intent to retire on Tuesday.

"I attribute the turnaround of the Omaha Fire Department to Chief Kanger and am grateful for his leadership. He has earned the trust and respect of his department and the community. He has personally responded to fire and disaster scenes and for the first time in many years, we project the Omaha fire department will be under budget by approximately one million dollars for the 2015 fiscal year," Stothert said in a prepared statement.
Kange

took over as fire chief in March 2014, replacing Mike McDonnel.

Stothert says she will name an interim fire chief before Kanger leaves and will conduct a national search for his successor.
