The man accused of killing two men in Omaha last October was in court Monday morning.

Michael Nolt fled the state after shooting and killing Malquan King and Arelius Hassell on Saturday, October 10, according to investigators.

He was eventually captured in Arizona and brought back to Nebraska to face charges.

Relatives of the victims say Nolt was traveling across the country with the two men he is accused of killing.

Hassell’s mother, Kimory Smith, attended Nolt’s court hearing Monday morning wearing a short in his memory.

“This is a still shot from one of his videos, of him walking through the grass up toward the clouds,” she said, describing her t-shirt.

In court, details of of how her son died were too much to bear.

“When he turned around and smirked at me, I had to go. Like, that was it. I mean there's no remorse,” said Smith.

The information from prosecutors also upset Hassell’s aunt.

“Where's the humanity? I don't understand. Why would you throw two young men's life away?” Khristiana Hassell asked.

Police say Nolt shot Hassell on a couch inside a friend's home. King and his girlfriend, Tommynique Valentine, were shot while hiding inside a closet.

“And then, the way the details that were given, and then you went back in to make sure that you killed everyone. Where is the humanity? He has no remorse?” Khristiana Hassell said.

According to detectives, Valentine survived by playing dead. Her children were also present during the shooting.

“My thing is, at any point -- it was his rental car. He could have gotten in the car and left,” Smith said.

The three men were traveling to visit Smith in Las Vegas, but King wanted to stop in Omaha to visit Valentine before heading west.

“Every day, I see the last time that I had to cover my baby up. What he's done, I just pray to God that God forgives him because it's going to take me a long time to get to that place,” Smith said.

Nolt is faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
