A shooting Wednesday morning near 16th and Victor killed 22-year-old Jarrell Haynes.

He was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

“My mother called my on the phone and told me Jarrell has been shot and it’s bad, it’s bad. He was standing on the outside of the porch, and they said that somebody in a black car ran up and shot at my mother's house,” said Jewell Shields, who is Haynes’ aunt.

“They had just come from court, and we believe they were followed,” she said.

When Haynes was in surgery, Shields came back to check on her 85 year old mother that lives in the house. She said her family has lost a lot of men to violence and it's frustrating.

“They just ran in my mama's house, they ran in there, glass is everywhere and she usually sits right there on the couch right by that door, and a bullet could have hit her and I could be here motherless,” said Shields.

The nearby café said this shooting just adds to the bad rep this area already has.

“It’s very frustrating, because I don't want anything to think, oh I can't come down here on 16th and V or 16th and Willis because it is too dangerous and that is not what I want,” said Alisa Luke who owns Ella Belle.

She said Haynes was not a bad kid and would always help her with her groceries.

Shields said she was always worried about Haynes being in this area, “we always feared for Jarrell because of the violence on Victor Street.”

Homicide detectives are investigating what lead to the shooting.
