The Islamic Center of Omaha opens its doors to the public, they say so people can learn more about their religion.

The event drew a variety of people from several religious backgrounds who say they attended to get a different perspective, and to understand Islamic culture.

The imam who led the meeting says Islam is a peaceful religion that respects women's rights, animals and the environment.

Muslim leaders say they don't consider Islamic extremists to be a reflection of Muslims.

They say some Muslim-majority countries, that treat women as second class citizens, are part of a culture, not the Muslim religion.

They’re holding these meetings twice a month, instead of once every two months, to show the community that they welcome everyone to learn about their religion.

While most of those who attended Saturday are Muslim, there were a handful of non-Muslims who came to learn.
